Inlays and onlays are restorations that can repair teeth that have been moderately damaged to the point that a traditional filling can’t do the trick, but a full dental crown is not necessary. Inlays and onlays offer many benefits when compared to traditional metal fillings.
- They are quite durable and made of the toughest, hard-wearing materials made to last up to 30 years!
- Inlays and onlays can strengthen all teeth by up to 75%, more than the maximum 50% offered by traditional metal fillings.
- Inlays and onlays can prevent the need for further dental treatment in the future.
These restorations, which are more conservative than dental crowns, save more of the tooth’s original structure and are often used to repair the tooth after moderate decay or other damage. Inlays and onlays are sometimes known as “indirect fillings,” because they are made in a dental laboratory outside of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are custom-made from an impression we take of the tooth and then bonded to the surface of the tooth at a subsequent appointment.
Inlays are used when the damage is on the chewing surface of the tooth between the points. Onlays, which are more extensive, cover at least one point. They are both natural looking and allow the tooth to function normally.
